    Description

Stunning Victorian agate Saltire brooch made of Sterling.  A rare and fine quality antique Victorian sterling silver Scottish brooch inlaid with 2 types of agate with the rare saltaire cross. Fairly rare to see one stateside, I purchased this brooch in England about 12 years ago.
A saltire is a heraldic symbol in the form of a diagonal cross, like the shape of the letter X in Roman type. Saint Andrew is said to have been martyred on such a cross. It appears in numerous flags, including those of Scotland and Jamaica, and other coats of arms and seals.
The agate stones are wonderful high quality gemstones and are perfectly set.  There are no cracks  or chips to any of the stones and this is a splendid example of Victorian heritage.  Extremely fine engraving on face.
This sweet brooch has no hallmarks which is fairly normal for pieces from this period but has been fully tested by a local jeweler and is sterling silver. The pin is original and in good working condition.  The C clasp is original and everything is in very, very excellent condition for it's age.
Measures 1 1/2 inches by approx. 2 inches. Free shipping to any of the lower 48 states
